for the Cacti honor are as follows:

     

  1. Name the chief characteristics of a cactus:

    A succulent plant, characterized by special organs called areoles (actually modified axilary buds) usually bearing spines and hairs which are modified leaves.

    Flowers are usually single (not clustered) and are from a few hundreths of an inch to 12 inches or more in diameter.

    Fruits are one celled berries, often juicy and edible but sometimes dry. It usually contains many black or brown shiny seeds.

     

  2. Name three uses of cacti.

    Goats and deer eat stems of prickly pear.

    Humans use them for fences.

    A heart stimulant has been extracted from Hylocereus.

    The barrel cactus is made into candy.

    Phonograph needles have been made from the spines of some species.

    Decorative lamp bases have been made out of some treelike chollas.

    In Mexico they are used as granaries to protect corn and other crops from rodents.

    Some cactus plants are used for food, but they aren't very nutritious.

    The fruit of many are used for food.

     

  3. In what areas of the world are cacti most plentiful? Why?.

    Cacti are native to the Americas and outlying islands. They are found from the Peace River in Canada to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. From the Galapagos Islands to the West Indies, but some varieties can be found around the world.

    Mexico ranks first in variety and abundance of forms. In the United States, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico have the most. Cacti thrive best in hot dry climates.
